The promoter of the F4 Central European Zone today presented trophies to the top three drivers in the Rookie Rocket ranking, recognizing their performances in the opening round of the championship.
The Rookie Rocket is a dedicated classification designed to spotlight true newcomers, drivers without significant testing mileage or gentleman drivers entering single-seater racing for fun. This initiative aims to provide a competitive platform for those who may not yet match the pace of the championship frontrunners.
In the opening round of the F4 CEZ at the Red Bull Ring in April, the Rookie Rocket classification concluded with David Walther from Maffi Racing in first place, Benett Gáspár from Zengő Motorsport in second, and David Gorčica from Janík Motorsport in third.
“This award gives me more confidence and makes me want to work even harder throughout the year,” said winner David Walther, who finished the three races a month ago in 8th, 7th, and 3rd place.
“To be honest, the race weekend wasn’t easy. We had some issues, but we worked through them and were there straight away. I would say that in my situation, the key moment was staying focused even though things weren’t going my way.”
Walther, along with the rest of the field, returns to the Red Bull Ring this weekend for another set of three races. Now with more experience on the track, what did Walther learn a month ago? “I definitely know how to react to different drivers on track now, so I can get on top,” added the Maffi Racing driver, whose aim is to progress further in the formula racing ladder. For now, however, his main focus is on delivering the best possible performance this season before turning to future plans.
Eligibility for the Rookie Rocket is determined by F4 CEZ organizers after the initial practice sessions and especially qualifying. It typically includes drivers whose lap times are over 101% of the fastest qualifying time, although this threshold may vary depending on the circuit. Every race weekend, the list of that round’s “Rookie Rockets” is published shortly after qualifying.
